Siracuse was the most important and powerful Greek city, rivalled Athens as the largest and most beautiful in Greek and Roman times. The peninsula of Ortigia is the self-contained hub of the old city with buildings of great interest and has numerous good restaurants and a lively atmosphere in the evening. The Neapolis quarter still preserves the Teatro Romano, the Altar of Heron II and the spectacular Teatro Greco, carved from the hillside.
