Experience the Palio di Siena

Dating back to medieval times, the Palio di Siena is far more than a horse race. It is a deeply rooted celebration of Siena's history and identity, with the city's historic contrade (districts) competing for victory and local pride.

Twice each summer, Piazza del Campo is transformed into a spectacular racing arena, with a specially prepared track of compacted earth encircling the famous square. Ten horses and their bareback riders, each representing one of Siena's seventeen contrade, race three laps in an event filled with anticipation and excitement.

Before the race, spectators witness the Corteo Storico, a magnificent historical procession featuring medieval costumes, flag-wavers and traditional pageantry.

From the atmosphere in Siena's streets to the excitement of the race itself, the Palio offers a fascinating opportunity to experience Tuscany's living traditions.
