A sharp geological division separates the Golfo di Orosei into two very different regions.  In the north, a low-lying coastline reveals a landscape of white sandy beaches backed by fragrant pinewoods, whereas the south is characterised by its mountain range, which until recent times, isolated the seafaring community of Cala Gonone from the rest of the island, rendering it accessible only by boat, or by the perilous path hewn out of the cliff face.  Nowadays, your first view of the village will be when you exit the tunnel, which connects the inland area of Dorgali to the coast, cutting straight through the mountainside to reveal panoramic views over the Golfo di Orosei: with the steep, winding road leading down through wooded hillsides to the village centre, with its lovely sandy beach and colourful fishing harbour.

The area surrounding Cala Gonone is just waiting to be explored.  From the harbour, one can hire small boats or book trips to the lovely beaches dotted along this coastline, such as Cala Sisine and Cala Luna (Moon beach), many of which are accessible only by boat or on foot.  Visit the Grotta del Bue Marino and explore its 900 metres of tunnels and underground streams. This stunning region is also popular with walkers and hikers, and attracts its fair share of climbers who enjoy the challenge of the surrounding limestone crags and mountains.

Hotel Brancamaria is situated just 900 metres from the centre of town. This comfortable hotel has newly renovated rooms, which are decorated in fresh, Sardinian style, many offering sea views.  

Restaurant La Terrazza, welcomes its guests with a rich buffet breakfast and  dinner. Enjoy the flavours of Sardinian and Mediterranean cuisine, prepared by the Chef using fresh, local produce.  Guests can choose to dine ‘al fresco’ on the terrace, with its lovely views over the sea.

The hotel features a large swimming pool with sun terraces, complete with pool bar and an ‘all day’ bar service offering snacks, aperitifs and cocktails.  A free shuttle operates to the town centre and the nearby beaches (operates 15May to 15Sep, three departures morning and afternoon). On the public beach, parasols and towels can be rented at local cost (currently €3.00 per umbrella & €1.00 per towel per day).
